I think a very obvious purpose I could use is discipline. Discipline is a major part of any martial arts. Without discipline, many fail in their martial arts journey. Martial arts contains some of the most mentally and physically intensive sports: Wrestling, Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, etc... I have personally seen so many times somebody come in and say they love the sport and then quit a week later. It's hard to show up the next day when your hands are hurting, your knees are messed up, and you know you have to face the person that messed you up last class again. It takes a lot of discipline to show up no matter how you feel.
Jiu Jitsu, like all other martial arts, requires a lot of discipline. It takes years and years of training in order to advance within the sport. You are never given anything within Jiu Jitsu, everything you have to work for. You can see in the image on the right the average progression in Jiu-Jitsu.
Something I and many others have personally noticed is how the discipline in Jiu Jitsu transfers over to a practitioner's daily life. The sport is very beneficial to people as it makes them work for progression. I believe this is something that the interviewees can discuss referring to the benefit it has had on their life.
So the overall goal of the Jiu-Jitsu episode is to describe the interviewee's journey in Jiu-Jitsu and describe the importance of discipline. Of how crazy this week was, I was never able to discuss the concept with my teacher. So next week I will make sure to discuss the concept and any of my teacher's suggestions.
