Films




Genre:

The genre of horror is majorly centered around creating unsettling feelings. They intend to invoke a sense of fear and in some cases panic among the audience. Most horror films also tend to end in a way meant to captivate the audience. Throughout horror films, the feeling of suspense is built upon.  Some form is evil is used a lot in horror films in order to establish these Unsettling
feelings.  The form in which evil is presented most commonly comes as a threat to one of the characters. It is important to note the things that enlist fear in horror movies do change. They have and will change in accordance with society's perception of fear.


Content in Horror :
Since horror films are meant to invoke unsettling feelings, dim lighting is used. The use of dark and dim lighting allows the feeling of 


suspense to be developed. Furthermore, it allows for many shadows to be created. Having these dark shadowy areas creates underlying fear from the opposition. Sound is also super important in creating a proper horror film. The alignment of sound and specific points in the horror film builds an unsettling sense. In fact, it emphasizes these unsettling key points during the film. 

Production Techniques:

The use of production techniques within any film is essential. Horror in specific is of no exception. Techniques like jump-scares are notorious when it comes to the genre. They are used to make the audience member alarmed, always at the edge. This feeling could be described as being anxious. The use of tight framing is another production technique that is used by the horror genre. It allows the director to draw the audience to a specific place. Controlling the audience's attention could create a sense of paranoia. Making the viewer paranoid also builds upon the feeling of being at the edge. 

Institutional Conventions:

Marketing is a tool used by many industries especially the film industry. Horror films use very interesting marketing techniques in order to push their films. The use of the internet through various platforms like youtube creates some awareness of horror films. But what really gets seats in theaters is when a production company does something unique. A major example of this is the advertising strategy for the movie "The Blair Witch Project". Their team created an interactive website named "www.blairwitch.com". Doing this created excitement before the movie's launch date. Many production companies are attempting to do such unique things. This need for embracive advertisement came from the growing expectation of society.




Film Sample One: Annabelle


This film is meant to invoke a constant feeling of suspense. The use of dark areas throughout the movie makes the audience fear the presence of Annabelle. Furthermore, the doll's design is scary in it itself. There are many scenes where jumpscares are used. On top of this many scenes use high pitch sounds that alarm the viewer. 

Film Sample Two:

The Blair witch project uses a very grainy hand-held camera. The use of such a camera allows the audience to be immersed with the characters. It allows creates distortion with what the audience can see. This makes the audience suspicious about everything in the setting. It creates an unsettling environment.
