First Portfolio Project Post

Portfolio Project Start

(Context)
This is the first posting for my AICE Media Studies As portfolio project! I am excited to have set on the 8-week path in completing this project. I am really looking forward to updating my blog week by week. There will be several postings a week outlining my progress in this journey. My posting will be looking at the development of various aspects of my project. You'll be able to see my thinking process and the challenges I face throughout this project. I can't wait to see how my project ends up!

Initial thoughts:

I was ecstatic when I was informed the portfolio project will be fiction. Fiction is one of my personal favorite genres of film. Growing up with films like The Martian(2015) and seeing the progression in the Terminator series (1984-2019) made me fascinated by the genre. Science fiction is a popular genre that is loved by many including myself. It's hard not to like science fiction with movies like Snowpericer(2013) and series like Black Mirror. I am also fascinated by how these films are produced. Fantasy is also a genre I love to watch. Films like Pan's Labyrinth(2006) and the series Game of Thrones really shows how far the genre has come. I wanted to gain more insight into both genres. In order to do this, I did some research and found these videos below.

The Evolution of Science Fiction (Feat. Lindsay Ellis) | It's Lit!

How Fantasy Reflects our World (Feat. Lindsay Ellis) | It's Lit

Both these videos gave me a really good insight into both genres. Throughout both videos, the history of both genres was given. Specific occurrences in history that lead to how the genre persevered today were given. Different elements of both genres and the variety within them were discussed. It was super SUPER useful in giving me context to both genres. I gained a deeper perspective on both genres. In the coming weeks, I am going to be looking at a lot of fiction media. I am going to watch media from different time periods for both genres. I believe this will be essential to my understanding of the genre. Currently, I am leaning towards Fantasy but only based on one concern. I need to have an idea that is feasible to create. This is something I will need to consider heavily as I don't have all the production money in the world. But it's also a challenge that I am intrigued by. After viewing mass amounts of media from both genres, I think it will be a much easier choice.

Initial Plans/Approach:

My first course of action is to watch films from both genres. I will be viewing films from the mid-1900s, late 1900s, and middle-late 2000s. Below is a list of three films from each era for both genres. In the following week, I will be viewing all six of these films.
FantasyScience Fiction
The Wizard of OZ(1939)

Metropolis (1927)

The Adventures of Baroon Munchausen(1989)

Dark City (1998)

The Green Knight (2021)

Inception (2010)

Whilst viewing these films, I will draw inspiration from the storylines they present. I want to also see how the genre has changed over time. Viewing the mid-1900s films will give me inspiration from the old-time directors. I think it would be really neat if I could implement something inspired by one of these early films. I will also begin to brainstorm potential plots for each genre by the end of the viewings. All my notes from the viewing of these films will be on my posts in the coming week. Then I will compare my potential ideas and decide which is the most feasible to create. I will have to consider the time and money each idea will take. I want my selection to be feasible but also be challenging. I don't want a bland plot that leaves the audience dying to leave after the first minute of the opening. No, that's not what I want at all. I want to encapsulate my audience's attention and keep them intrigued till the last second of the opening. I know the work I will have to put in in order to achieve this. It's something I am so willing to do in order to have the satisfaction of others enjoying what I created!
